Making mobiles easier to use

In 2010, Rica (now the Research Institute for Disabled Consumers) carried out research to identify the features that can increase the usability of mobile phones for all users - including disabled and older people.

The research was commissioned by the Communications Consumer Panel and included extensive industry and consumer research. The latter included user trials with 64 consumers.

Key findings

Our research identified that:

  • a number of simple improvements could be made to mobile handsets that would benefit all users
  • improving usability can have benefits for mainstream users while at the same time widening access for disabled and older users
  • more options to customise phones could greatly increase usability for a wide range of users, including disabled and older users
  • disabled and older people often do not have the information they need to choose a phone that meets their needs, or know where to get that information
