For people in work

Are you in work or looking for work?

If you need a powered wheelchair to get to work, the Government Scheme Access to Work may provide a grant to help you pay for it.

  •     Access to Work grants are only available if the employer is based in England, Scotland or Wales.
  •     Access to Work (NI) grants are only for employers based in Northern Ireland.

The Scheme exists to provide money for practical support to help you get or stay in work. The scheme is administered by the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) and will pay for:

  •     additional costs
  •     support costs and equipment.

You will be seen by a DWP assessor who will determine what you need.

Your employer may have to pay some of the costs – this depends on the size of the organisation and how long you’ve worked there. From 1 October 2015, the grant will be capped at £40,800 a year.

In our powered wheelchair user survey, only about 5% of users got a powered wheelchair funded by Access to Work.
